There are two keyboard remaps that I use to prevent my left pinky from getting fatigued by prolonged computer use.
The first is remapping Caps Lock as another Escape key. I presume most vi users already do this. The home row is just too valuable of real estate for something silly like Caps Lock.
The second remap is from the Emacs camp. I swap I Left Alt and Left Control. They do stuff like this to prevent Emacs pinky, but it’s not just Emacs abuses the Control key. And there really is no downside to this remap, because you can still hit Alt with your right thumb from basically resting position. This might feel more familiar for the Apple folks too.
I run this command at X startup to apply the changes:
setxkbmap -option ctrl:swap_lalt_lctl -option caps:escape
I believe this is doable in Wayland too, but I think it is configured in a per-compositor manner. If it’s too complex, maybe just buy a fancy keyboard with QMK support.
